NYSSAPS Fall 2011 Meeting

NYSSAPS Fall 2011 Meeting — Common Questions Answered

This page answers the questions attendees ask most often about the fall 2011 meeting, hosted by the Department of Physics & Astronomy at SUNY Oneonta. The gathering unites the New York Sections of the American Physical Society (NYSS-APS) and the American Association of Physics Teachers (NYSS-AAPT), and it doubles as the 105th Topical Symposium of the NYSS-APS.

Symposium Theme and Keynote Speaker

“Superconductivity & Applications” is the theme of this symposium, selected to celebrate 100 years since superconductivity was discovered (1911–2011). Friday evening's program features a Keynote Lecture given by Dr. Ivar Giaever, a Nobel Prize winning physicist.

Student Involvement and Poster Session

Students are encouraged to join in. A poster session highlights research by both undergraduate and graduate students, and the top judged posters receive cash prizes. Submissions from every branch of physics are welcome.

Workshop for Teachers

On Saturday morning, NYSS-AAPT offers a three-hour PTRA workshop for teachers called “Ranking Tasks.”

Lodging and Registration

A number of Oneonta hotels have reserved room blocks at $77 per night, the maximum federal per diem rate for New York; see the Accommodations link for specifics. Since the meeting takes place over Columbus Day weekend, booking early is recommended. Registration fees increase after 10/3/2011, so it pays to sign up early.
