The College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) at the University at Albany-SUNY, in conjunction with the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, will host the Spring 2011 Meeting of the New York State Section of the American Physical Society. The theme of the meeting is the Physics of Carbon Electronics. Keynote speakers for this meeting are Manish Chhowalla from the Department of Materials Science at Rutgers University, who will speak on the physical and chemical properties of graphene oxide, and Phillip Kim from the Physics Department at Columbia University, who will speak on graphene based electronics. There will be a banquet on Friday evening, where Alain Kaloyeros, who is the Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of CNSE, will give a presentation on Nanotechnology. There will also be several invited talks on various aspects of graphene and carbon nanotube-based electronics on both days of the meeting. Contributed poster presentations from both graduate and undergraduate students in any area of physics are welcome.
The venue for the meeting is the NanoFab South (NFS) building of the world-class, $7 billion Albany NanoTech Complex. This complex, which is located on the western side of the University at Albany campus, is an 800,000-square-foot megaplex that houses the only fully-integrated, 300mm wafer facilities in the academic world, including over 80,000 square feet of Class 1 capable cleanrooms equipped with 300mm wafer processing tools. The complex incorporates state-of-the-art education, R&D, and pilot prototyping infrastructure for nano/microelectronics, nanophotonics and optoelectronics, nano/micro systems (MEMS) and nanopower science and technology. More than 250 leading global nanoelectronics companies have partnerships with CNSE, including a growing number with a major presence on site, including IBM, SEMATECH, GlobalFoundries, Tokyo Electron and Applied Materials, contributing to an expanding workforce of over 2,500 scientists, researchers, faculty and others. A tour of the CNSE Albany NanoTech Complex will be given on Saturday morning.
