~Celebrating the 100th Year of the Discovery of Superconductivity~
(1911 – 2011)

The Department of Physics & Astronomy of the State University of New York College at Oneonta (SUNY Oneonta) is proud to host the fall 2011 joint meeting of the New York Sections of the American Physical Society (NYSS-APS) and the American Association of Physics Teachers (NYSS-AAPT). This marks the 105th Topical Symposium of the NYSS-APS.

The theme of the fall 2011 symposium is “Superconductivity & Applications” in honor of the centennial celebration of its discovery. We have put together an informative and engaging program that includes a number of invited talks covering a broad range of topics such as historical perspective, theory, recent advances, and application in areas such as medicine, computers, and superconducting devices. A highlight of the program will be the Keynote Lecture by Nobel Prize winning physicist Dr. Ivar Giaever on Friday evening.

Other meeting activities include a poster session with contributions from both undergraduate and graduate students. (We encourage students to submit posters of their work in any area of physics; best judged posters will receive cash awards.) And, a three-hour PTRA workshop for teachers entitled “Ranking Tasks” will be offered by NYSS-AAPT on Saturday morning.

There are a number of hotels in the Oneonta area that have reserved blocks of rooms at the maximum federal per diem rate for New York of $77/night; see Accommodations link. Early reservations are suggested as the meeting falls on Columbus Day weekend, which is traditionally a busy tourist time in upstate New York. Instructions and passes for campus parking will be forwarded with your registration acknowledgement.
